 Educate. Advocate. Support. Empower

As a Teacher, you understand that...

Mental health disorders can create many challenges in the classroom. You probably know some students who, because of difficulties, do not enjoy being in school and worst case scenario they may hurt themselves or others. Psychological problems can make them feel worried, frustrated, and unable to succeed. Maybe, your classroom is being disrupted and other students are affected negatively.  Maybe you have struggled to motivate children who have become demoralized or have difficulty transitioning to a new environment. Or there is bullying going on and you are wondering what you could teach the students to help them to not bully or be bullied.  Or there are requirements for mental health education in your school or district."

You might wonder, "How can I address all of these concerns and at the same time raise awareness and educate my students and peers?"

The Mental Health Association GC has developed the Learning2Live™ (L2L™), their cornerstone program. This curriculum, designed by a school principle, teacher and a psychologist, is geared for teachers for delivery to students in their classrooms and utilized for educating parents about the many mental health disorders common in middle school students and adolescents, including suicide, depression, self-mutilation, anxiety and eating disorders. It is a tool that that when used to educate students and parents is helping to create a holistically supportive environment for the students in the school, home and community.  It includes topics such as Dealing with Change, Life Long Mental Health, Bullying and many more! Each topic is stand alone and does not rely on a previous lesson.  It helps students, teachers and parents to identify when something is going on and what to do about it.

The L2L™ Program empowers teachers, social workers and parents to take leadership roles in the provision of mental health services within the school. It allows school education professionals, as well as students, to identify and prevent issues that could come up in the school environment due to mental disorders. It helps to identify when it is a disorder and not just a child or adolescent acting their age and, of course, tips on what one can do.

What teachers say:

The MHAGC mental health education program has been and continues to be very value added program to our JROTC program curriculum.  Health education is a requirement for all freshmen integrated within either physical education or JROTC.  L2L™ is cost effective and leverages the latest information and mental health trends that affect our population.

What students say:

“I used to think that all my pressure and stress was winning.  Thank you for the tips to deal with this type of thing.”  —Estefany

“I learned that instead of judging, I should support a person who shows signs of mental illness”. —Ana

“I just realized that what I was doing and thought it was funny, really is not”. —Pedro

“I know many kids my age who were depressed and tried to kill themselves. I now know the signs to look for and what to do to help”. —Jocelyn

“Thank you for listening to me and providing me with ways to deal with my issue.  I was giving up hope before this session”. —John

“Over my time with MHAGC I have had the privilege to work with many Chicago Public High School teachers, counselors, and administrators. These individuals arrive at work not only as educators, but mentors, and shoulders to lean on. Many of their students come from unstable home lives or difficult living conditions, with experiences unfathomable to many of us. It is unrealistic to think these students can excel in a classroom without the mental and emotional support the school teachers and staff provide”. —Chuck Trucco, former program facilitator

The L2L™ Scripted Curriculum includes:

  • Anticipatory Set
  • Lesson Plans and Materials
  • Structured Activities & Role Playing
  • Practice and Closure Activities
  • Instructional strategies
  • Power Point Presentations with Talking Point

  • Lesson terms and their definitions
